Welcome

Dear RCF Students and Parents,

Welcome to our thirteenth annual Read-a-Thon!

Books open a child’s mind to a world of possibilities! Just sitting on your bed, you can travel to ancient Mexico, the depths of the Pacific Ocean, the moon, or even a distant land that has yet to be discovered. Reading is a child’s passport to anywhere!

How It Works

  1. Parents set up an online Read-a-thon account at the Read-a-thon Webpage (www.pledgestar.com/rcf)  to track minutes and seek donations.  (It takes fewer than 10 minutes to complete. If you set up an account a previous year, you just have to activate it!)
  2. Students and parents read and sign the Reading Oath
  3. Students READ as much as possible from November 22nd to December 8th, and track their minutes and books on their own Read-a-thon Webpage or the paper sheet provided
  4. Students secure pledges from friends and family via simple emails sent through their own Read-a-thon Webpage  (NOTE: If you participated last year and click “import family and friends from previous event”, emails will automatically be sent to your friends and family!)
  5. Students who read and raise funds get prizes! RCFES PTA gets money to support important work like cultural events, community building, and teacher trainings.

Important Dates

November 16-18th: Read-a-thon info distributed

November 22nd: Read-a-thon starts!!!

December 8th: Read-a-thon ends

December 11th: Reading Log and Reading Oath must be complete.

December 11th: Pledges must be paid. You don’t have to raise money, but every dime helps!!

December 16th: Winners announced and prizes distributed.

What Type of Reading Counts?

  • Reading before and after school or during a teacher-designated read-a-thon time in class. (Homework reading counts!)
  • Being read to by other people.
  • Reading aloud to other people (or animals). If you read to someone who is also participating in the Read-A-Thon, it counts for both of you.
  • Reading anything – comic books, magazines, workbooks  – in any language.
  • Reading under your covers at night with a flashlight. (Only if your parents allow it!)
